Italian Sloppy Joes

Italian Sloppy Joes is a dinner time favorite. Toasted French Bread is filled with hearty Meaty Tomato Sauce and covered with oozy melted cheese. It's a super easy to make dinner recipe in under 30 minutes that is based on classic Sloppy Joes. This is one of those recipes that even the pickiest eaters devour. 

You can never go wrong with Homemade Sloppy Joes for dinner in our house! Other easy dinner recipes we love are Mexican Sloppy Joes, Pepperoni Pizza Grilled Cheese, and Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches

A few days ago while I was browsing through Once A Mom Always A Cook's tasty blog I noticed her latest post was Italian Sloppy Joes.

Oh good golly miss molly I was about ready to lick the screen! It was my two favorite parts of spaghetti, the sauce and the french bread in one.

But wait a minute it didn't end there, the bread was smothered in cheesy goodness... Did I mention these are super easy to make and a great weeknight meal?

I was sold, plus I have a serious love for anything with the word sloppy in it!

As for these Italian Sloppy Joes they are definitely going into the quick easy dinner rotation.

In a large skillet brown:
  • 1 pound Ground Beef.
Add and saute until onion starts to soften:
  • 1/4 whole Onion, Diced
  • 3 cloves Garlic, Minced 
Add and stir until well combined:
  • 8 ounces Mushrooms, Sliced
(If your hamburger is excessively greasy drain off the fat, reserving 1 tablespoon in pan.)

Add:
  • 1 whole Bell Pepper, Diced
  • 15 ounces Tomato Sauce
  • 14 ounces Canned Diced Tomatoes
  • 6 ounces Tomato Paste
  • 1 tablespoon Italian Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon  Granulated Garlic
  • 1 pinch Red Pepper Flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper. 
Then add 1-2 tablespoons honey. I used 1 tablespoon but I would add one and then taste the sauce to see if it needs another.

Stir together well and bring to a simmer. Cover pan and turn heat to low. Move in to next step..

(I altered this recipe by using diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning, and granulated garlic. I liked the thought of the chunkiness of the tomatoes and I used the Italian seasoning and garlic because I didn't have the other herbs called for. This recipe was adapted from Once A Mom Always A Cook.)

Cut 1 loaf french bread in half and remove the insides leaving about a 1 1/2" of bread  around the edge creating a bowl.

This next step also varied from the original recipe but I love how it leaves the bread extra toasty when I make my Meatball Subs. Brush inside and outside of french bread with olive oil.

Toast in a 450 degree oven for 4 minutes or until just barely lightly brown and toasty.

Divide Italian Sloppy Joe mixture evenly between both toasted hollowed out french bread loaves.

Divide cheese evenly between both loaves.

Sprinkle with a little oregano and return to 450 degree oven for 4-6 more minutes or until cheese is melted, bubbly and starting to brown.

(I removed mine at 5 minutes from the oven. It wasn't as brown as I would have liked but I was losing daylight outside! Ugh the life of a food blogger!)

Italian Sloppy Joes

Italian Sloppy Joes is a dinner time favorite. Toasted French Bread is filled with hearty Meaty Tomato Sauce and covered with oozy melted cheese. It's a super easy to make dinner recipe in under 30 minutes that is based on classic Sloppy Joes.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground Beef
  • 1/4 whole Onion, Diced
  • 3 cloves Garlic, Minced
  • 8 ounces Mushrooms, Sliced
  • 1 whole Bell Pepper, Seeded And Diced
  • 14 ounces Canned Diced Tomatoes With Juice
  • 15 ounces Canned Tomato Sauce
  • 6 ounces Tomato Paste
  • 1 tablespoon Italian Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Granulated Garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt Or To Taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper Or To Taste
  • 1 pinch Red Pepper Flakes (Optional)
  • 1-2 tablespoons Honey (To Taste)
  • 1 Loaf French Bread
  • 2-3 tablespoons Olive Oil (For Brushing French Bread)
  • 8 ounces Mozzarella Cheese, Grated
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  2. In a large skillet cook ground beef until just starting to brown. Add garlic and onions and cook until onions start to soften. (If hamburger is excessivly greasy drain fat reserving 1 tablespoon in pan.)
  3. Add mushrooms, bell pepper, canned tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, italian seasoning, granulated garlic, sea salt, pepper, red pepper flakes (if using), and honey.
  4. Bring mixture to a simmer. Turn heat to low and cover.
  5. Meanwhile slice french bread in half equally down the middle creating two halves. Scoop out the bread in the center leaving about 1 1/2" of bread around the edges and forming a bowl.
  6. Brush Bread half all over the inside and outside with olive oil.
  7. Place in 450 degree oven for about 4 minutes or until just barely lightly brown and toasty.
  8. Divide sloppy joe mixture evenly between both french bread halves.
  9. Divide cheese and oregano evenly between both loaves, to top sauce mixture.
  10. Return to oven and cook another 4-6 minutes or until cheese is melted, bubbly and starting to brown.
  11. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes or until cool enough to handle.
