10 days to Thanksgiving, are you ready?
I'm still in the process of menu planning. Colt has agreed to join me in the kitchen this year and we'll be prepping as much as we can ahead of time to simplify the process.
Colt made these Hot Apple Cider Buttered Rum Cocktails to help us warm up with the chilly weather we've been having. They are a must on my Thanksgiving menu.
The batter can easily be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge, it only becomes better with age.
The Hot Apple Cider part of these drinks can easily be kept warm in a crock-pot for an easy to serve cocktail over the holidays.
Hot Apple Cider Buttered Rums are sure to please!
Cream together:
- 3/4 cup Butter
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Cinnamon
- 3/4 teaspoons Nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon Allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon Ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt
- 2 teaspoons Pure Vanilla Extract
Add to Hot Buttered Rum batter:
- 2 cups Brown Sugar
- 1 tablespoon of Honey
Mix until smooth, and creamy.
Once Hot Butter Rum Batter is combined store in fridge until ready to use.
I find the batters flavor improves after a day in the refrigerator as the spices and butter have time to mellow and blend.
To assemble Hot Apple Cider Buttered Rums: Place 2 teaspoons Buttered Rum Batter in a mug, add 1 shot of good quality Rum and top glass with Hot Apple Cider. Garnish with cinnamon sticks and serve.
I promise these will be a hit!

These sound so good Serena and it sounds like you've got Thanksgiving so organized!
There's nothing like a hot toddy to warm you up. Sounds delish.
Need to store this idea up for the holidays. Yum!
This looks and sounds delicious! Morgans Spiced Rum is my all time # 1 favourite tipple so now I will try it with your recipe using those lovely spices and hot cider. I can't wait! Thanks for the inspiration!

This is my type of recipe. Love, love, love hot buttered rum.
I have never had anything like this if you can believe it. I have to change that immediately. It looks so good!!
Nothing says happy holidays like a good ol' strong cocktail ;-)
mmmm, yes please. But, maybe in a couple hours. These look awesome for while I'm decorating the tree this year!
We mentioned your recipe and website on our TV show, "MovieShots." https://www.facebook.com/moviesatthebar/videos/744263282396381/
Thanks for the sharing this delicious drink!
Hello! What a great recipe. My fiancée and I are hoping to have a hot buttered rum cider drink as our signature wedding cocktail and this one looks promising. When you say to top off the glass with hit cider, how big of a glass are you using? I'm trying to figure out how much cider we'll need to buy so we don't run out. Thanks!
Hi Nick, I used a 8 ounce Irish Coffee Mug. Good luck and congratulations! -Serena
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.
How many drinks does this batter make?
Hi, About 30 give or take a few! Thanks, Serena
Could I do this with 2 gallons of fresh cider in a slow cooker?
Hi! Yes, that would work great to keep the cider warm! Thanks, Serena
These sound amazing! How long will the batter keep? I think I might give jars of it out for gifts this Christmas
Hi Lauren! It should keep at least a week or two in the fridge. I haven't tried it but it would probably be ok longer frozen. It might be worth testing a container out! Thanks, Serena
Would these taste good with spiced rum? I'm don't usually drink, when I do it's not rum and we are having a group get away weekend for fall foliage this weekend--would love to make these and we have 2 full bottles of spiced rum that I'd to use instead of buying different kind.
Hi Vicki! Yes, I think it would be delicious! Thanks, Serena
It looks like 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon in the article, but 1/2 tsp in the recipe?
If making for a gathering and would like to keep in a crock pot or something similar, am I able to mix all of the ingredients in beforehand and let people take from there?
Hi Kelly! That would work!
Making these for the first time - the recipe sounds outstanding! One question - how hot should the cider be? Should it be brought to a boil before serving? Thanks!
Hi! The cider doesn't need to boil. You'll just want to heat it until it's a comfortable temperature to drink.
Can I make a batch of this in a crock pot and keep it on warm?
Yes, it works great to keep warm in a crock pot! Thanks, Serena
Hi Serena, so I see people asked about keeping this warm in the crock pot, does that include putting the batter in with the apple cider and rum? Thank you.
You could add the batter to the apple cider but I would add the rum separately at the time of serving unless you don't mind the alcohol burning off. Thanks, Serena
