Apple Crisp is a fall favorite recipe that graces our table often. It's simple enough to make that even those that don't bake can make a truly amazing dessert. I've been told it's the BEST Apple Crisp and favorite on the dessert table for Thanksgiving and Christmas as an alternative to apple pie, but easy enough dessert for any night of the week.
Apple Crisp is one of those recipes that always reminds me of childhood memories of my Great Grandparents house. It was a staple dessert at all family functions.
As a kid whenever we went to a large family gathering there was always an amazing Apple Crisp on the dessert table waiting to be devoured.
This recipe for Apple Crisp is easy enough to make make any night of the week, but still a favorite for the Thanksgiving and Christmas dessert table. It's simply the best!

I used a combination of Granny Smith and Braeburn apples in this crisp. I've used Pinova Apples in the past and love them equally. They are a little harder to come by sometimes.
I find using a blend of apples gives the filling a nice depth of flavor from the sweet and tart apple combination along with plenty of cinnamon, and a little vanilla for warmth. The lemon juicy adds a brightness to the flavor, and really brings the crisp together.

The crisp topping is sweet, but not overly sweet, and extra crunchy to compliment a large scoop of ice cream.
In a large bowl combine:
- 4 cups Peeled & Sliced Granny Smith Apples
- 4 cups Peeled & Sliced Braeburn Apples or Pinova Apples
- 3/4 cup Brown Sugar
- 1/3 cup Whole Wheat Pastry Flour or All-Purpose Flour
- 2 teaspoons Cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
- Juice of 1 Lemon.
Stir until well combined.
What Are The Best Apples To Make Apple Crisp?
I really like Granny Smith Apples for their tartness and texture. They are one of my favorite baking apples. I added Braeburn for for a little sweetness without having to add too much sugar. I also like Pinova Apples but they only have a limited time of availability in the fall. Honey Crisp are also a good option if you are looking for a sweeter apple.
Spread apples evenly in the bottom of a 9"x13" pan.
For the topping combine:
- 1 1/2 cups Whole Wheat Pastry Flour or All-Purpose Flour
- 1 cup Oatmeal
- 1 cup Walnuts (Optional)
- 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
- 1 cup Brown Sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
In a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment.
Add 14 tablespoons Cold Butter, one tablespoon at a time mixing on low speed until crumbly.
Once all butter has been mixed in mixture should form large crumbs.
Evenly sprinkle crumb topping over apples and bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour or until lightly brown.
Serve Apple Crisp with a large scoop of vanilla or cinnamon ice cream or Homemade Caramel Swirl Ice Cream.
A few other favorite apple recipes are:
- Caramel Apple Cobbler
- Apple Pie Cobbler Skillet
- Apple Dumplings
- Caramel Apple Pie
- Caramel Apple Cake

I had your hometown guess narrowed down to two places: upstate New York or Washington state. So I did somewhat okay! This looks fabulous, apple crisp is one of my husband's favorite desserts!

Wow!! I studied your recipe and it looks amazing- from the walnuts in the crust and the lemon in the filling. This is a keeper.
We love apple crisp in our home and make it in the fall when local orchards have the best apples. Your photograph is stunning and the crisp looks scrumptious. Wonderful, beautiful recipe!
Thanks so much Patty!
Thanks so much Susie!
Washington is definitely apple country. Crisp is a perfect choice.
If someone asked me what my favorite dessert was, I'd have a tough time but apple crisp would be in the top 2-3. I LOVE this stuff. It's soft, fruity, sweet, tart, crunchy and all-over wonderful. I love your photos!
This looks perfect! Gotta have the ice cream too!
Is it really 14 tablespoons of butter or is that a typo? Sounds like an awful lot of butter!
It really has 14 tablespoons of Butter, just shy of a cup.
My husband and I are each attached to our own version of apple crisp. I made this last week and we both absolutely love it!! I'll only make this in the future, it's amazing!
I found this recipe that I had printed off at some time in the past as I was going through my recipes today. I made it tonight and found it to be the best apple crisp I’ve ever made (or ever had). I used my food processor to make the topping rather than my mixer since I needed to dirty the food processor to chop my walnuts anyway. This did mean I had to dirty another bowl since I couldn’t add the chopped walnuts and oatmeal to the food processor, but I prefer to use the food processor for making things “crumbly “. I also turned the oven down to 325 after 30 minutes since it seemed to be brown on top and bubbly already at that point. I think I’ll go delete every other Apple Crisp recipe I’ve saved online and throw away every other printed recipe. This really is the bes!
