Easy to make Rice Pilaf is a family favorite side dish recipe! Made with shallot or onion, orzo pasta for color and texture, jasmine rice, chicken stock and herbs. It makes a great side dish with fish, seafood, chicken, or beef.
I can't believe I totally forgot about my blogiversary on April 26th and just realized today! It's hard to believe I've been sharing my favorite recipes for 6 years now and this Rice Pilaf with Orzo is no exception.
There's probably a million different versions of Rice Pilaf but I decided on this occasion to keep it simple with some browned orzo. The nutty flavor and texture of the orzo adds a wonderful contrast to a simple dish that will pair well with just about any main dish.
Rice Pilaf with Orzo will quickly became a highly requested side dish at the dinner table and family favorite!
Here's how I make Rice Pilaf:
In a large sauté pan with a tight fitting lid add 2 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil and heat over medium-high heat until starting to become hot.
Add:
- 1/4 cup Minced Shallot or Onion
- 3/4 Uncooked Orzo Pasta
Stir in 3/4 cup Jasmine Rice or White Long Grain Rice and cook until rice starts to become translucent.
Stir in:
- 3 cups Chicken Broth
- 1 teaspoon Rosemary
- 1 teaspoon Thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
Fluff with a fork and stir in 1 tablespoons of butter if desired. It's great with seafood, chicken, and pork chops.
In case you have a cupboard full of those boxed rice mixes you might want to use them up before making the homemade version of Rice Pilaf with Orzo. Once you go to scratch you'll never want to go back!

Can long grain rice be used instead of had
jasmine rice?
Hi Nancy, Yes long grain rice would work. Thanks, Serena
Could this be made in an instant pot?
Hi Catherine, I haven't tried it but it seems like it should work! You would just need to adjust the cook time accordingly. -Thanks Serena
Serena, I would just like to say that this dish is simple, easy to make and delicious! It will be one of my "keeper" recipes for sure. Interestingly enough, my husband - who is not fond of either rice or pasta - asked me to make it again tonight! I made it for the first time two nights ago to accompany sweet and sour meatballs - YUM!
This was both easy and delicious. I brought it to friends dinner party and everyone loved it. Thank you.
