If you are hosting a St. Patrick's Day Party this year or just having a festive dinner Irish Brown Bread is a must make recipe.

I first saw this recipe over at That Skinny Chick Can Bake and knew I had to give it a try. Liz said it was the most authentic recipes for Irish Brown Bread she has come across after a trip to Ireland.

Since we won't be going to Ireland anytime soon we try to do the next best thing by enjoying authentic recipes whenever possible.

I made Irish Brown Bread to go with Irish Guinness Beef Stew I'll hopefully be sharing next week, but it would also be amazing with Corned Beef and Cabbage, or just a great sandwich loaf.

I couldn't believe how quickly the bread was devoured, but the texture was perfect. I switched up the original recipe by adding some Guinness to accompany the stew for a lighter loaf, adding a little more brown sugar, and sprinkling some quick oats over the top to make it look pretty.

The best part is Irish Brown Bread is so easy to make.

Here's how to make Irish Brown Bread:

Wheat Germ and Wheat Bran toasted on a cookie sheet.
Preheat oven to 350°. Spread 3 tablespoons Wheat Germ, and 3 tablespoons Wheat Bran on a cookie sheet.

Bake for 5-8 minutes until just lightly starting to brown.

Whole Wheat Flour, All Purpose Flour, Toasted Wheat Bran, Toasted Wheat Germ, Dark Brown Sugar, Quick Oats, Baking Soda and Salt in a mixing bowl.
In a stand mixer or bowl add:

  • 1 3/4 cup Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1 3/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • Toasted Wheat Bran and Wheat Germ
  • 1/4 cup Dark Brown Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Quick Oats
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
Mix until well combined.

Butter added to flour mixture in a stainless steel mixing bowl.
Add 2 tablespoons Diced Cold Butter and mix until butter is like fine pebbles. If you aren't using a mixer you can use your fingers or a fork to incorporate butter.

Guinness Beer and Buttermilk added to Irish Brown Bread.

Add 1 cup Guinness Beer and 1 cup Buttermilk.

Irish Brown Bread dough in a stainless steel mixing bowl.

Mix on low speed just until combined being careful not to over mix.

Irish Brown Bread Dough in a loaf pan covered with rolled oats.

Butter a 9"x5"x3" Loaf Pan with butter.

Add dough to bread pan and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon Quick Oats. Bake in a 425° for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center of loaf comes out clean.

Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan and finish cooling on baking rack before cutting.

It's delicious sliced and toasted with a little jam and butter too..

I found this other gorgeous loaf of Sweet Potato Bread over at the Wimpy Vegetarian that looks like a must make.
